My breast is puffed up, my neck is swollen.
I've a fine head and a high waving tail,
ears and eyes also but only one foot;
a long neck, a strong beak, a back and
two sides, and a rod right through my middle.
My home is high above men. When he who stirs
the forest moves me, I suffer misery.
Scourged by the batteries of hail,
hoar-frost attacks and snow half-hides me.
I must endure all this, not pour out my misery.

My origin was age-old (I endured many winters);
I lived in towns after the keeper of fire
(unlocked the lives) of men encircled by flame,
purged by fire. Now the brother of earth,
my enemy, who from the first brought me
sorrow, imprisons me. I well remember
who drew me and my like from our first
abode; I can do him no evil
but at times I'm an instrument of bondage
the whole world over. I've many talents,
on middle-earth I've vast strength,
but I must conceal from all men
the secret source of my precious skill
and my extraction. Guess what I'm called.

our course together: I'm swifter than he,
sometimes stronger; he's more strenuous.
At times I rest; he must run onward.
